Elections - More non-partisanship needed

| 12/4/2013

Turbulence associated with Florida's elections is a matter of record, and election-bias claims seem to escalate with each election cycle. The state's elections environment would benefit if all county supervisors of elections positions were made non-partisan — a move that has been advocated by the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections. This would require action at both the state and local levels. The 20 Florida counties that operate under county charters (comprising 75% of Florida's population) can choose to make the supervisor's position non-partisan, and many have. For non-charter counties, a change in state law would be required. It's a simple move and would help improve an increasingly divisive political environment and make Florida less of a focal point for election controversies.
